Another HUGE congratulations!

January 30, 2009 · 4 Comments

I met Cara online about a year and a half ago, and even though our relationship is a virtual one, I adore her! I love her postive attitude (took that tropical pink eye in stride), ambition (has worked like crazy to get her kids home) and fearlessness (heads off to Haiti on her own and just may double the number of kids in her family this year under circumstance others might find insurmountable). I’d love to say more, but…  I’ll just send you to her blog instead. Cara, you are the greatest.  Here is a picture she gave me permission to use when I wrote about her a few months ago – I’ll repost it:

momma-and-her-kids

There’s big news for Cara and her family: TONIGHT her little boy, Kenley – with the blue shirt on this picture – is COMING HOME!!!! There was a time when it looked like his case might never make it through the system and now he is on his way, being escorted to Chicago. It is so wonderful. What is he going to think of the snow, his new home, the new language, different foods, his new daddy and siblings? He knows his momma, and that is what really matters.

His homecoming does have a touch of bittersweet to it, though. Jenite, the other little girl Cara is adopting — in pink in the photo above — is still in process, so Jenite will stay at the orphanage while her little brother flies. That side of the story is heartbreaking. I hope that Kenley’s leaving for his new home will help Jenite to believe that yes, she, too, will one day have her day to fly.

The kitchen help

Zufan loves sitting on the counter, and it is enough of a treat so that she’ll usually let me do a few things that I need to do before she’s wanting to be either in my arms or in the kitchen sink again. Turning the radio on and off (and blasting the volume at irregular intervals) is also a joyful passtime. Her big siblings have only a moderate tolerance for radio play. It’s sure a good thing that toddlers are so darn cute and adorable and sweet and loving. They make the rest of us find patience we never knew we had.

Life and its dirty tricks

January 26, 2009 · 4 Comments

Was it just a week ago that I wrote that I was thankful for, among other things, 40 mile weeks? Well… I guess someone up there didn’t like my self-congratulating, because I just finished a week so low in mileage that I’m thinking I might as well give up! Entirely. Forever. I was a fake runner anyway. So maybe I need to keep things in perspective? But here’s an image of me exercising this week — except I’m a bit less cute:

The very day I wrote that “thankful” post a water main broke at the health club, and closed it temporarily. The club re-opened — but not the childcare area!!! They are recarpetting the play area, and it is STILL CLOSED. An entire week to recarpet? They’d get it done faster in Guayama. (You Puerto Ricans out there, know I’m saying that with a huge amount of affection. :) ) However, I can’t blame my off week totally on the closed club because the few times I did get away to run, I was overwhelmed by fatigue… and I missed the kids… and I needed to clean the house… and had to do lesson plans… AYYYY. I want to scream right now. I should just sit on the couch and eat Doritos and watch TV.

OK, ok, I won’t do that, and it is a new week. I bought a new exercise journal, and I’m hoping to get back on track. It’s amazing, though, how one off week can make things seem overwhelmingly overwhelming. Send me some good thoughts to get me running again. I’m sending you all good thoughts, too. Happy Monday, and here’s to a really produtive and happy and high mileage week.

Easy hair for a few days

Zufan does so well at the salon. She loves the wash, the cute little chairs and the extra attention from unfamiliar faces. They all think she is such a doll baby. I have to stand right beside her; not to hold her still, but to interpret all of her baby talk. She carries on a full conversation during the whole ordeal. And then, when it’s over, she gets a tootsie roll, which ends up mostly as a brown stream of drool on her shirt. I’m glad that we’ll be having an easy hair week. It’s so nice to avoid the combing-out fuss. As soon as I can find a good salon that I trust to do it, we are going to get little locks in. Until then, we are loving the cornrows.

Somebody to love

We all need somebody to love. Look at that cute little face (in need of a wet washcloth, I know). She looks like she’s cozy there, doesn’t she? Once in a great while, the wild and crazy baby cuddles up to mommy. It makes all the rest of the day worth the work. Happy Friday! :)

Life goes on, even when you don’t write about it

January 21, 2009 · 9 Comments

I’m amazed that it does. Somehow, writing about what I, or we, are up to makes it more real. It’s nice to blab away and as a bonus, get feedback. Blogging is awesome.

I don’t know that I’ve saved much time by not writing. I’ve continued to read your blogs, for the most part, and I’ve also upped my facebook time to fill in the minutes that were used to write a post. So it’s time to write.

In no particular order, here’s a little photo essay of  a few of the things that I’m thankful for lately:office-2

My job. I’m back at school. Or work, I should say. New semester, new classes, new lesson plans. It’s going well (two days in. :) ). This picture isn’t new since I didn’t think I should whip out the camera on day one to take an actual teaching picture, so we’re making due with an office oldie. I’m really, really thankful for my job. I need a new one that pays more, but for now, I’ll take it. I like my office mate, love the department chair who is so relaxed and supportive and hands-off, and my students are great, too — for the most part. Best of all, I’m done by 11:00 in the morning (which is also why I need an additional job…)

The kids are doing great! The picture is from Christmas at my parents’ house since I haven’t been taking full advantage of the photo ops lately. I’m so happy and  thankful that they love each other so much and get along so well. Kids will always have their siblings, even after we parents are long dead and gone, so that sibling relationship is precious. Zufan likes to say, “I amo tin-tin (nickname for her brother’s name), I amo cis-sa (sister’s name), I amo pa-pa, I amo ma-ma, I amo me,” and from there she’ll get into the inanimate object love: “I amo ball, I amo agua, I amo num-num.” I could go on. All day, as she often does. She talks non-stop. From morning till night, that kid is talking. So I’m also thankful for a bilingual talking baby. Actually, right now she is a monolingual Spanglish speaker. But we’re getting there. Her development is right on track.

I’m also extremely thankful for the free childcare at the gym I go to. Because of that I’ve been able to stay sane keep up the running and other fitness activities. I’m in the 8th week now of running a steady 40 miles a week, plus one or two spinning classes and one short swimming session a week. Unfortunately, it is still a challenge for me to get to that magical 40 mile marker. I just can’t seem to adapt, even though forty miles isn’t much considering that a “real” runner would run double that mileage. I guess it’ll have to be good enough under the circumstances. The spinning is a little dull but easy, and it’s a relaxing break from running. Amazingly, I’ve started to enjoy swimming, which I hated at first because it was such a struggle. I still get cold but take a burning shower afterward to make up for the misery. Right now I don’t have knee problems, or giardia like I did last year at this time or any other type of illness or injury. Which brings me to the next point: I’m so thankful that we ALL are healthy. Wow, I’m thankful for that. It’s huge.

jan-2009-010

I’m thankful that homeschool is going well, even as we’re planning for the kids to go to public school next year — I think. The big girl’s Chinese is great.  She can chatter away like a natural with her Chinese-speaking friends. We’ve spent lots of time on writing in Chinese this year so she’s making good progress there, as well. Her reading in English and Spanish is at, well, probably my level. The little guy can do basic addition and subtraction, but no reading, yet. That’s OK; he’s the expert at putting things together (and taking them apart.) The photo above is the 9 year old with one of her adored Chinese teachers and her even-more-adored little friend and playmate, the teacher’s son.

jan-2009-012

I’m thankful for the 800 square feet of living space to play in! It’s a world away from the 500 we lived in for way too long. The only thing about going up in size is that now I’m fantasizing about, say, 1000 sq ft… Greedy, greedy human I am. Above, they are in their room playing a combination of Petshops, Little People, and My Little Ponies. Petshops are the favorite. For those of you awaiting those referrals, stock up, now! They can play for hours with them.

Finally, I’m thankful for Ralph’s World. I need to do a video of the kids dancing to the shake-your-booty song. It’s hilarious. The big girl calls the song “totally inappropriate for children.” My mini-me. :)

OK, back to work. Thanks for taking time to read all this, as I know it got a bit long. And oh yeah, welcome to the first day of our beautiful new world, led by President Obama. I’m inspired to try to do my tiny part to change the world –or to at least change one moment of hurt in the world to a moment of happiness for someone. I’m feeling hopeful, and sending a little love for all of you out there; you’re all wonderful. Will you send some to me, too? I’m needing the love right now. That’s for every one of you who stops over to read even once in a while. So let’s do this thing and make the world a better place. Give your kids — or that random stanger – an extra hug today.

This is how my computer looked at school this morning. Welcome to a beautiful new America! I have hope – for myself, for all of us in this country and for the world, even Haiti. What a great moment in history and a great time to be alive.

A little blogger vacation — maybe

January 3, 2009 · 6 Comments

Hey guys! I’m thinking I need to really stay off the computer for awhile and get my priorities in order in this new year. There are so many things I feel like I should be writing about. Zufan talks all the time now and I’m far behind on sharing her cute development. But there are even more things that I need to DO, organizing our lives and finding my own way, too. Some of the things going on are things I can’t write about, which makes me feel like I’m floating along in the land of what Julie called “blogger-lite.” I love that phrase. I’ve sure been there for a while now! Maybe I’ll post again soon — but maybe I’ll take a little break for a week or a month or so; I don’t know. Just in case this is the start of a short break time, I love you all!! I really do. Check back. Because yes, I will be back. :) E-mail or facebook me until then. Here’s a photo from today in the bookstore. Happy, happy New Year to you all.
